In the tropical rainforests there are many caves inhabited by bats and birds, which have made them their homes from time immemorial. The deforestation of Aceh during the 80's and 90's made a number of these caves accessible. On the ground of these caves lies a thick layer - often 30 metres deep or more - of bat and bird droppings.  Rich in nitrates and phosporous this guano, as it is known, is the best organic fertilizer known to man.

Profits are ploughed back into another upriver project: The Gunung Mas initiative of replanting Aceh's depleted forests. We are doing this through the network of traditional religious schools (pesantren) in Aceh, starting with our own Eco-village community of Gunung Mas/Peulanteu in West Aceh.  

We thought that this would complete a cycle with a kind of symmetry and ecological justice.  Because of the deforestation of parts of Aceh the guano caves became accessible revealing the wherewithall to help fund reforestation.
